""South Westland coach Kevin Hill says his team is “coming right at the right time” after beating top-of-the-table Kiwi, at Cass Square on Saturday, denying the Hokitika team a place in the finals this weekend.

The low-scoring 15-13 victory for the southerners was affected by the wet, blustery conditions, which limited back play to some extent.

Kiwi went into the match confident, having risen above the rest of the

Coast sides to sit eight points clear in the Muir Trophy competition, and seven points clear on the aggregate points table.

But their season came crashing down on Saturday as South Westland’s defence stunted the Hokitika hosts’ strong attacking capabilities.

“We defended well against their strong midfield, they couldn’t really penetrate like they have all season,” Hill said.

“Our forwards really dominated, they stepped up when they needed to.”

The maroons led from the outset, prop Ryan Kennedy scoring twice, while halfback Kip Nolan ran in one try.

“We probably blew a couple tries as well, from handling errors.

“That was probably more because of it being blustery, but it was slippery as well.”

Looking at the approaching final against Blaketown, which will host the match at McLean Park, Hill said travel would not be a factor as his side was accustomed to journeys before games.

He was confident South Westland could upset Blaketown, having beaten them at Hari Hari just a few weeks ago.

“Timing’s everything, we’ve just peaked at the right time.

“The boys know there’s an opportunity and they’ll be keen to grab it.”

The Kiwi club spokesman was unable to be reached for comment.
