\u00a0rugby \u00a0side \u00a0on \u00a0a \u00a0windswept\u00a0McLean Park, on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">Wests \u00a0\u2014 \u00a0shock \u00a020-16 \u00a0victors \u00a0over\u00a0South Westland a week earlier \u2014 looked\u00a0well \u00a0on \u00a0course \u00a0for \u00a0a \u00a0second \u00a0giant-killing \u00a0effort \u00a0when \u00a0deservedly \u00a0leading\u00a0Blaketown \u00a020-12 \u00a0with \u00a0three-quarters\u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0match \u00a0gone, \u00a0but \u00a0a \u00a0previously\u00a0lacklustre Blaketown finally came to life\u00a0to snatch victory, with three tries in the\u00a0last 20 minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">In other games, South Westland beat\u00a0Marist \u00a0<strong>20-17<\/strong>, \u00a0and \u00a0Kiwi \u00a0accounted \u00a0for\u00a0Grey Valley, <strong>79-3<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\"><strong>Blaketown\u2019s<\/strong> \u00a0busy \u00a0No \u00a08 \u00a0Brogan \u00a0Watt\u00a0led the resurgence with lock Alan Monk\u00a0marginally \u00a0behind.\u00a0 While \u00a0his \u00a0fellow\u00a0forwards \u00a0were \u00a0on \u00a0cruise \u00a0control, \u00a0Watt,\u00a0again off \u00a0the back of a struggling scrum,\u00a0was \u00a0full \u00a0of \u00a0running \u00a0in \u00a0an \u00a080-minute\u00a0effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">Wests, \u00a0claiming \u00a0two \u00a0tightheads, \u00a0had\u00a0an \u00a0obvious \u00a0advantage \u00a0in \u00a0the \u00a0scrums\u00a0but Blaketown dominated the lineouts,\u00a0again with Monk and Watt to the fore,\u00a0stealing many of Wests\u2019 throws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">Wests first-five Nathan Smith was the\u00a0star \u00a0of \u00a0an \u00a0impressive \u00a0backline \u00a0which,\u00a0using \u00a0guile \u00a0and \u00a0pace, \u00a0was \u00a0a \u00a0lot \u00a0more\u00a0creative \u00a0than \u00a0the \u00a0black \u00a0line, \u00a0which\u00a0relied on the strength of Phil and Rob\u00a0Thompson to batter their way over the\u00a0advantage \u00a0line. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">Loose \u00a0forwards \u00a0Sean\u00a0Meldrum and Craig Douglas shone in\u00a0the Wests pack along with front rower\u00a0Chris \u00a0Lord, \u00a0while \u00a0diminutive \u00a017-year-old \u00a0wing \u00a0Nathaniel \u00a0Hamilton \u00a0played\u00a0well above his weight to earn his team\u2019s\u00a0man of the match award.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">Blaketown, \u00a0aided \u00a0be \u00a0a \u00a0strong \u00a0tail\u00a0wind, went straight on to the attack but\u00a0struggled \u00a0to \u00a0cross \u00a0the \u00a0Wests \u00a0line \u00a0until\u00a0Monk scored from a tap penalty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">The \u00a0blacks, \u00a0with \u00a0the \u00a0wind \u00a0at \u00a0their\u00a0backs, \u00a0spent \u00a0most \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0first \u00a0half \u00a0on\u00a0attack \u00a0but \u00a0Wests \u00a0made \u00a0all \u00a0their \u00a0rare\u00a0forays \u00a0into \u00a0opposition \u00a0territory \u00a0pay,\u00a0firstly with a try to second-five Myson\u00a0Teata, which levelled the scores at 5-5,\u00a0and then a try to fullback Logan Ross,\u00a0who juggled a high pass and scored to\u00a0keep his team in contention at 10-12.Watt \u00a0had \u00a0scored \u00a0the \u00a0home \u00a0team\u2019s\u00a0second try amid a 30m rolling maul, the\u00a0try converted by Nik Cumming.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span \u00a0soon\u00a0after \u00a0the \u00a0restart, \u00a0managed \u00a0to \u00a0bounce\u00a0another difficult kick off \u00a0the inside of an\u00a0upright to stretch the lead to in\u00a0their half, looked on course for victory\u00a0but, \u00a0spurred \u00a0on \u00a0by \u00a0a \u00a0Phil \u00a0Thompson\u00a0try, \u00a0and \u00a0a \u00a0Cumming \u00a0penalty \u00a0that\u00a0leveled \u00a0the \u00a0scores \u00a020-20, \u00a0drew \u00a0away\u00a0with \u00a0another \u00a0rolling \u00a0maul \u00a0try \u00a0to\u00a0Kevin \u00a0Curtis, \u00a0converted \u00a0by \u00a0Cumming\u00a0and \u00a0a \u00a0last-gasp \u00a0try \u00a0to \u00a0halfback \u00a0Luke\u00a0Negri,who darted over after a ball had\u00a0bobbled out the side to a scrum near the\u00a0Wests line.\u0090<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">Marist coach Luke McNeish said his\u00a0side \u00a0fought \u00a0back \u00a0from \u00a0a \u00a010-0 \u00a0deficit\u00a0at \u00a0half-time \u00a0to \u00a0lead \u00a0the \u00a0match \u00a0with\u00a0five \u00a0minutes \u00a0to \u00a0go \u00a0but \u00a0were \u00a0unable \u00a0to\u00a0clear the ball from their line in the dying\u00a0minutes and South Westland capitalised.Giant \u00a0lock \u00a0Isei Ngasu \u00a0starred \u00a0in \u00a0the\u00a0green \u00a0pack, \u00a0scoring \u00a0both \u00a0tries, \u00a0and\u00a0flanker Sean Loveday produced another\u00a0impressive performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">French \u00a0halfback \u00a0Hugo Torres \u00a0kicked\u00a0a \u00a0penalty \u00a0and \u00a0two \u00a0conversions \u00a0but \u00a0his\u00a0countryman, \u00a0lock \u00a0Sylvere \u00a0Mathieu,\u00a0suffered \u00a0a \u00a0season-ending \u00a0facial \u00a0injury\u00a0requiring surgery in Christchurch.\u201cWe \u00a0gave \u00a0them \u00a0too \u00a0much \u00a0of \u00a0a \u00a0start,\u00a0managed to get the lead late, but then\u00a0lost had\u00a0prevailed in a \u201cgood old ding dong\u201d.\u201cWe controlled the first half but they\u00a0had \u00a0the \u00a0better \u00a0of \u00a0most \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0second,\u00a0until we got back in front at the end,\u201d\u00a0Mathieson said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">Man of the match, No 8 Josh Hill, was\u00a0a tackling machine, \u00a0side\u2019s\u00a0romp over Grey Valley, but he was loath\u00a0to sort out any others for praise.\u201cIt was pretty much a really good team\u00a0effort with no one in particular standing\u00a0out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">Grey \u00a0Valley \u00a0player-coach \u00a0Ben\u00a0Ferguson \u00a0said \u00a0his \u00a0side, \u00a0decimated \u00a0by\u00a0off -season \u00a0defections, \u00a0showed \u00a0marked\u00a0improvement \u00a0and \u00a0was \u00a0\u201cturning \u00a0the\u00a0corner\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">Halfback Keith McLeod had another\u00a0outstanding \u00a0match \u00a0to \u00a0earn \u00a0the \u00a0man\u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0match \u00a0award, \u00a0while \u00a0lock \u00a0Kurt\u00a0Decker \u00a0and \u00a0second-five \u00a0Kevin \u00a0Moore\u00a0again proved his worth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">\u201cWe \u00a0are \u00a0taking \u00a0things \u00a0right \u00a0back \u00a0to\u00a0basics.\u00a0\u201cIt will take a while (to again compete\u00a0with \u00a0the \u00a0best)
