On the other hand, the Coast could take pride in its two good wins over Canterbury in the Home and Away fixtures. Six matches were played, and their record was an improvement on the single win in the previous season’s six matches. West Coast lost a number of old representatives, including G.T.Nolan (fullback), and J.A.Hooper (five-eighth), both of whom returned to Canterbury, and W.Vincent, ex-Canterbury and West Coast half, who joined the League Code. ln addition, F.Freitas retired after many years of faithful service, and C.Schroder (wing), W.Hughes and J.Beban (five-eighths), and B.Kelly, H.Thiele, L.Hughes and N.Uniacke (forwards) did not play for the Union during the season.

The selectors called on 26 players altogether, new reps. being P.Pascoe (Blaketown), and R.Kirkwood (Cobden), in six games each, R.Roberts (Hokitika Kiwis), five games, and in the sixth as a replacement, J.Agnew (Hokitika Pirates), L.Pedrotti (Blaketown), J.Anderson (Hokitika Pirates) and R.Birchfleld, in three matches each, Anderson in addition coming on once as a replacement, whilst J.Noonan (Greymouth Star), five-eighth, and W.Barry played twice. Old Players who re-appeared were: E.Pfahlert (Hokitika Pirates), M.Davidson (Hokitika Excelsior), A.Scandrett (Blaketown) and J.Walker (Hokitika Kiwi), in six games each; R.R.King (Hokitika Excelsior), M.Olsen (Blaketown), and W.Mann (Greymouth Stars), in five games each; G.D.M. Gilbert (Greymouth United), S.Hendry (Wataroa United), E.Collins (Cobden) and J.O.Cox (Wataroa United), in three matches each; whilst R.Kear (Greymouth United), forward, two games, and J.West (Hokitika Kiwi), five-eighths, one game, were others who played.

Mann and Pfahlert were fast and in good form, and Gilbert played some good football at centre. Roberts was very promising. But, it was to their forwards that the Coast owed their wins. On a heavy ground at Greymouth the tenacity and speed of their forwards gave them an advantage over the heavier Canterbury pack, but in the return match, under good weather conditions, it was still the pack with its great loose play and fine backing-up that gave the Coast victory. A.Scandrett was a first class forward, and R.R.King (captain of the side) was in his best form. P.Pascoe, R.Birchfield and M.Olsen (hooker) were the best of a good pack. Following the Christchurch match the team went into camp at Kaikoura for a week, and on September 16th they played a practice game with a Kaikoura XV winning 28-9.

R.R.King played in both Test Matches for New Zealand, and also tor the South Island.
