Commencing the season with a clear-cut victory over Canterbury, West Coast appeared a likely side – a vigorous and experienced pack was supported by a lively set of young backs. After a victory each in the the home-and-home matches with Buller, the Coast was then successful in capturing the Seddon Shield from Marlborough, only to lose it to Buller in the next challenge match. Thereafter no First-Class representative football was played in the seven weeks prior to September 27, a very big break at the height of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n

The loss of T.R.O’Callaghan to Auckland was well balanced by the availability of Walker, the ex-Southlander, who became captain, and was in fine form with his noticeable straight running. Lindbom again proved his all-round ability at fullback, on occasions being outstanding; he certainly merits a trial in better company. Silcock was a speedy winger, whilst a new representative, Rea, displayed real promise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Frequent changes of five-eighths were far from conductive to securing combination. Nine different players took the field in that position in the seven matches, and only one appeared there as many as three times. Muir had represented Canterbury in 1945, whilst Hopkins was the Nelson representative of 1943. The Stoop Brothers are young players of promise. Horrack played soundly behind the scrum, with Tainui, who had previously appeared once for West Coast in 1939<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, coming into the team for the final match. Seven of the forwards participated in five or more of the matches. <\/span><\/p>\n

Butler, who transferred to Wellington late in the season, and Birchfield, provided a solid pair of hard-working and capable locks. Nelson and Wieblitz were first-class side-rankers, good loose players, and sound tacklers. At the back of the scrum, Thompson, a newcomer to representative football, improved considerably, and displays promise developing into a really good forward. McKendry, whose last appearance had been in 1944<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>, was a reliable hooker, with two representatives, R.R.Eastgate an Panther, supporting him in the front row.<\/span><\/p>\n

In all, 32 players wore the West Coast colours during the season, 16 being backs and 16 forwards, whilst 13 were making an initial appearance in First-Class Rugby. West Coast nominees for the New Zealand trials were Walker, Lindbom, Muir, Butler, and Haddock, only the first-named receiving a run. For the South Island team, those nominated were Walker, Lindbom and R.R.Eastgate, none of whom were chosen.<\/span><\/p>\n
