The team was an experienced one, well led by Rogers, who played finely and with vim. His fellow-lock, Lindbom, veteran of 83 games for the Coast, was a tower of strength in the scrummages and in the tight play. The lively loose forwards, side-rankers Vieceli and Caldwell, and the energetic and fiery No. 8, Maughan, were quickly on to opposing backs, and set many movements alight. The front row was comprised of Richardson as hooker, and McMillan and De Goldi as props.

Young Johnson became the regular half-back and did quite well. McAra, returned after a year in Canterbury and again a most useful first five-eighth. Toomey, a new representative, displaced Keehan at second five-eighth. Gray was a sound centre, with Woolhouse, a newcomer, and McNee, the regular wingers. King had a good season at full-back. Rogers played in the Prince of Wales Cup match and represented New Zealand Maoris in Fiji, whilst Wright was a member of the New Zealand Services side that also toured Fiji. Only eight of the 28 players were wearing the Coast jersey for the first time, Maughan having done so last in 1961, and De Goldi in 1959. McPherson, who appeared once only has worn the Coast colours on 59 occasions.

1964 Squad

A.G.King (Greymouth Star)
W.A.R.James (St.Mary’s Old Boys)
R.J.Woolhouse (Hokitika Excelsior)
Kenneth McNee (Blaketown)
M.A.Gray (Hokitika Kiwi)
G.R.Keehan (Greymouth Marist)
T.N.McAra (Greymouth Marist)
T.J.Toomey (Franz Josef)
T.E.McLean (Greymouth Star)
B.J.Conradson (Greymouth Marist)
B.W.Johnson (Hokitika Excelsior)
B.J.Viccclli (Blaketown)
T.E.Rogers (Hokitika Kiwi)
C.J.P.McPherson (Greymouth United)
N.R.McMillan (Greymouth Marist)
Robert Forsyth (Blaketown)
Q.P.Kelly (Greymouth Marist)
W.A.Kennedy (Greymouth Marist)
J.F.Thompson (Blaketown)
N.G.Bishop (Greymouth United)
J.B.Maughan (Greymouth Marist)
J.A.L.Wright (Hokitika Excelsior)
R.W.Baty (Hokitika Kiwi)
V.J.De Goldi (Cobden)
Ralph Richardson (Greymouth Star)
E.J.Steele (Hokitika Excelsior)
B.E.Caldwell (Greymouth Marist)
A.J.Lindbom (Cobden)

MATCH RECORD

Played 7 ; Won 4 ; Drew 1 ; Lost 2 ; Points: For 75 ; Against 82

May 16 v BULLER at Westport Won 9 to 5
T.N.McAra, dropped goal
B.J.Conradson, 2 penalty goals

June 1 v CANTERBURY at Rugby Park Greymouth Lost 6 to 19
A.G.King, 2 penalty goals
Referee: Mr.J.J.Walton (West Coast)

July 11 v BULLER at Rugby Park, Greymouth Won 17 to 15
Kenneth McNee, 4 tries
A.G.King, penalty goal and conversion
Referee: Mr.F.Hawes (Buller)

July 22 v BUSH at Rugby Park, Greymouth Won 11 to 8
B.W.Johnson, T.J.Toomey and G.R.Keehan, tries
A.G.King, conversion
Referee: Mr.J.C.Reynish (West Coast)

August 8 v GOLDEN BAY-MOTUEKA (Seddon Shield) at Motueka Won 14 to 6
J.B.Maughan (2), Kenneth McNee and T.J.Toomey, tries
A.G.King, conversion

August 15 v A CANTERBURY XV at Christchurch Drew 15 to 15
A.G.King and M.A.Gray, tries
A.G.King, 3 penalty goals

August 29 v BULLER (Seddon Shield) at Rugby Park, Greymouth Lost 3 to 14
Kenneth McNee, try
Referee: Mr.J.K.White (Nelson)

Back to Year by Year Index click here Acknowledgments to the NZ Rugby Almanack Franchise: 1964 Season WEST COAST COLOURS: RED AND WHITE HOOPS…

[10,12
246
post-464","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-west-coast-ru","category-year-by-year","tag-sports
["GET
